"The sacraments of the New Testament were instituted by Christ the Lord and entrusted to the Church. As actions of Christ and of the Church, they are signs and means by which faith is expressed and strengthened, worship is offered to God and our sanctification is brought about. Thus they contribute in the most effective manner to establishing, strengthening and manifesting, ecclesiastical communion. Accordingly, in the celebration of the sacraments both the sacred ministers and the other members of Christ's faithful must show the greatest reverence and due care."
(Canon 840)

"The sacraments of baptism, confirmation and the blessed Eucharist so complement one another that all three are required for full christian initiation."
(Canon 842-2)

"Baptism, the gateway to the sacraments, is necessary for salvation, either by actual reception or at least by desire. By it people are freed from sins, are born again as children of God and, made like to Christ by an indelible character, are incorporated into the Church. It is validly conferred only by a washing in real water with the proper form of words."
(Canon 849)

"A person who has not received baptism cannot validly be admitted to the other sacraments."
(Canon 842)

Communion
For Holy communion to be administered to children, it is required that they have sufficient knowledge and be accurately prepared, so that according to their capacity they understand what the mystery of Christ means, and are able to receive the Body of the Lord with faith and devotion.”
(Code of Canon Law, Canon 913)

Through catechetical classes, family workshops, rites, and parent meetings, children in the second grade level or higher prepare for the celebration of First Eucharist/Communion.

Reconciliation
Reconciliation
Saturdays 3 - 4:30pm
or by appointment

The parish provides instruction for this sacrament in the second year of Christian Formation.
“In the sacrament of penance the faithful who confess their sins to a lawful minister, are sorry for those sins and have a purpose of amendment, receive from God, through the absolution given by that minister, forgiveness of sins they have committed after baptism, and at the same time they are reconciled with the Church, which by sinning they wounded.”
(Canon 959)

Preparation for this sacrament is given on various levels. Adults are given this in the RCIA sessions and children are prepared in the second grade prior to First Eucharist. Teens are given this preparation in the RCIA. Sessions deal with a greater awareness of the need to be healed and forgiven and to let go of past hurts. The practical aspects of the sacrament are also discussed.

Confirmation
“The sacraments of confirmation confers a character. By it, the baptized continue their path of Christian initiation. They are enriched with the gift of the Holy Spirit, and are more closely linked to the Church. They are made strong and more firmly obliged by word and deed to witness to Christ and spread and defend the faith.”
(Canon 879)

In accordance with the guidelines from the Archdiocese of Portland, St. Mary’s invites youth in the 9th and 10th grade to prepare to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation. The Sacrament of Confirmation completes the process of initiation into the full life of the Catholic Church and both renews and strengthens our baptismal call to live our faith in Christ in our world.

Marriage
The marriage covenant, by which a man and a woman establish between themselves a partnership of their whole life, and which is of its own very nature is ordered to the well-being of the spouses and to the procreation and upbringing of children, has, between the baptized, been raised by Christ the Lord to the dignity of a sacrament. 2. Consequently, a valid marriage contract cannot exist between baptized persons without its being by that very fact a sacrament.”
(Canon 1055 1-2)
