What Catholics Believe...
We listen to the Word of God proclaimed in the Scriptures. The Catholic and Protestant Bibles are almost identical. We believe that the Bible is the inspired Word of God.
We are a family that celebrates. We gather to celebrate the Mass-the Lord’s Supper. We also celebrate through the seven sacraments—Baptism, Eucharist, Confirmation, Matrimony, Holy Orders, Reconciliation, and the Anointing of the Sick.
We are a church who prays. The Mass is our primary prayer, but Catholics pray in many other ways. We have the Rosary, the Stations of the Cross, the Liturgy of the Hours, meditation, Perpetual Adoration and centering prayer.
We are a church that believes in One God, our creator. We believe in the Son of God, Jesus Christ, Our Savior. We believe in the Holy Spirit, God’s presence with us. Our most central beliefs are contained in the Creed which we say at each Mass. The Creed is a prayer that is over 1600 years old.
We are a church who remembers those who have gone before us in faith. We hold up the lives of holy men and women, like Mary the Mother of God, St. Francis or Mother Teresa. These saints have given us an example of how to live our lives as disciples. We look to their guidance and intercession to bring us closer to God.
We are a church who keeps tradition. We trace our roots back to the apostles and the teaching of the early Church leaders. This is called Tradition. For Catholics both Scripture and Tradition are important in helping us to know God. The Catholic church has an official group of teachers who interpret the Tradition called the Magisterium. This is made up of the Pope and Bishops. At the parish level there are the pastor, pastoral staff and catechists.
